Civilian Career Paths

Career associations are editorial assessments of the cited evidence, not an official crosswalk unless the evidence explicitly says so. O*NET supplies civilian occupation information, not proof of a military match. Related experience does not confer civilian qualifications. Tasks and tools below describe civilian work, not military training.

Commercial Pilots

Piloting trainer aircraft for the military pilot training mission provides aircraft-operating experience directly relevant to commercial flying.

How to prepare: Have your flight records reviewed against FAA commercial pilot certificate and rating requirements to identify remaining training or testing. Certification requires the appropriate medical exam, specified flight experience and knowledge, and written and practical flight exams.

What the civilian work involves
  • Check aircraft prior to flights to ensure that the engines, controls, instruments, and other systems are functioning properly.
  • Co-pilot aircraft or perform captain's duties, as required.
  • Monitor engine operation, fuel consumption, and functioning of aircraft systems during flights.
Civilian tools and software (examples)
  • Aeronautical charts

Notes & Sources

  • Pilots must pass periodic physical and practical flight examinations to perform the duties granted by their certificates.
