How many Navy ratings and officer designators are there?
This directory lists 185 Navy ratings and officer designators across 9 career areas. Navy classification codes (NECs, subspecialties, administrative codes) are browsable as separate views. Being listed here does not establish current service use. Codes confirmed historical are kept out of this list and stay in the legacy archive with links to their successors.
What is a Navy rating?
The Navy classifies enlisted sailors by rating, a short letter abbreviation like HM for Hospital Corpsman or IT for Information Systems Technician. Beyond ratings, sailors earn four character Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) for specialized skills, officers carry designators and subspecialty codes, and a small set of administrative markers (such as disqualification trackers) is published alongside them. Each kind of code gets its own view here.
Where does this Navy rating data come from?
Ratings and NECs follow official Navy classification publications and are cross-checked against Navy COOL, the Navy's credentialing program.
