Overview
A flight engineer performs aircraft visual inspections and operates and monitors engine and aircraft system controls, panels, indicators, and devices during flight. They calculate and apply weight, balance, and performance data while monitoring electrical, communication, navigation, hydraulic, fuel, air conditioning, and pressurization systems for warnings and failures.

- Flight Engineer (1A1X1) is a retired identifier: its skill ladder appears in the AFECD 30 Apr 23 edition and is absent from the 30 Apr 25, 31 Oct 25, and 30 Apr 26 editions.
- Enlisted aircrew duties are now performed under the four CEM Code 1A100 aviator specialties (Mobility Force Aviator, Special Mission Aviator, Multi-domain Operations Aviator, Executive Mission Aviator); former flight-engineer positions survive as aircraft-qualification shreds inside those specialties, so the code alone does not establish current duties or qualifications.
