Optometrists
Military experience diagnosing and managing eye disorders, providing specialty vision services, and co-managing ocular complications directly supports civilian optometric practice.
How to prepare: Compare your existing education, examination history, licenses and credentials with the intended state's licensing board and employer requirements. All states require licensure based on an accredited O.D. degree and qualifying examinations, with additional examinations required in some states.
What the civilian work involves
- Examine eyes, using observation, instruments, and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus, and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities, such as glaucoma or color blindness.
- Analyze test results and develop a treatment plan.
- Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids.
