Military experience examining, diagnosing, and treating conditions of the teeth, jaws, oral cavity, and supporting structures directly overlaps civilian general dentistry.
How to prepare: Ask the dental board in your intended state to review your education, examination history, and current license against its licensure requirements. State licensure is required, and candidates usually need a DDS or DMD from an accredited dental program plus written and clinical exams.
What the civilian work involves
- Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, or other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
- Formulate plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue.
