How to prepare: Ask the intended state's dental board to review your dental education, examination history, and current license status against its licensing requirements. Dentists must hold a license in the state where they work; requirements vary but usually include a DDS or DMD from an accredited dental program and passing written and clinical exams.

- Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, or other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
