Nurse Midwives
Army experience providing prenatal care, managing labor and delivery, assessing fetal well-being, and caring for postpartum patients and newborns directly overlaps civilian nurse-midwifery practice.
How to prepare: Ask the destination state's nursing board to review your existing qualifications against its nurse-midwifery requirements, generally including an RN license, accredited graduate education, national certification, and APRN licensure. Confirm prescribing scope and admission privileges with the board and prospective employer before accepting a clinical role.
What the civilian work involves
- Provide prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, or newborn care to patients.
- Monitor fetal development by listening to fetal heartbeat, taking external uterine measurements, identifying fetal position, or estimating fetal size and weight.
- Provide patients with direct family planning services, such as inserting intrauterine devices, dispensing oral contraceptives, and fitting cervical barriers, including cervical caps or diaphragms.
