73A Social Work
Overview
A social work officer provides clinical counseling, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, substance abuse intervention, and critical event debriefing in military settings. The officer also conducts teaching, training, supervision, research, administration, consultation, policy development, disaster relief, civil affairs support, and psychological autopsies for service members, eligible family members, and Department of the Army civilians as appropriate.

What the Work Involves
- Counsel clients in individual or group sessions to assist them in dealing with substance abuse, mental or physical illness, poverty, unemployment, or physical abuse.
- Advocate for clients or patients to resolve crises.
- Interview clients, review records, conduct assessments, or confer with other professionals to evaluate the mental or physical condition of clients or patients.
- Collaborate with counselors, physicians, or nurses to plan or coordinate treatment, drawing on social work experience and patient needs.
- Monitor, evaluate, and record client progress with respect to treatment goals.
