0688 Cybersecurity Technician (PMOS)

MARADMIN 541/18 directed active and Reserve enlisted Marines in grades Sergeant through Gunnery Sergeant with primary or intended MOS 0688 to receive a new primary MOS of 1711, 1721, or 067X. The destination depended on a review of registered preferences and the needs of the Marine Corps, rather than an automatic assignment to one successor.

Documented history

Cybersecurity Technician (PMOS)

Marines were encouraged to register their MOS preference no later than 1 October 2018, when Headquarters and Manpower and Reserve Affairs would review preferences and select the new specialties. The new MOSs were scheduled for diary reporting on 5 October 2018; that date marks the reporting step, not the preference review.

  • 0688 Marines eligible for FY19 bonuses as 1721s were to be offered the same amount if redesignated as 067Xs.
Source extraction notes

MARADMIN 541/18 does not print the occupational title; the title is corroborated separately by NAVMC 1200.1D. Paragraph 2.a applies to all Active Component and Reserve Component enlisted Marines with PMOS or IMOS 0688, Sergeant through Gunnery Sergeant. Personnel were encouraged to register an MOS preference no later than 1 October 2018; Headquarters and Manpower and Reserve Affairs would review preferences that day and select 1711, 1721 or 067X according to Marine Corps needs. Paragraph 2.c schedules diary reporting of the new MOSs for 5 October 2018. Paragraph 3 applies the message to the Marine Corps Total Force.

Cybersecurity Technician(PMOS)

MOS 0688, Cybersecurity Technician, was renamed Defensive Cyberspace Operator, retaining code 0688 and its primary MOS (PMOS) status. The FY19 table also identifies a revised MOS description and changed requirements.

1 October 2018 was the scheduled active-duty-component batch date in the Marine Corps Total Force System (MCTFS); Reserve and formal-school implementation followed separate conditions.

  • The specific description and requirement changes are not detailed in the available evidence.
  • Reserve retraining for PSMRP, Active Reserve and SMCR was required as needed for conversion, subject to available funds; service-record updates for Individual Mobilization Augmentees, Individual Ready Reservists and Standby Reservists used headquarters conversion action as authority.
  • Formal schools were to continue awarding current MOSs until a MARADMIN directed implementation.

Source new title: Defensive Cyberspace Operator (PMOS). Figure 4-1 remarks: 2, 7. Paragraph 4001.1b schedules the active duty component MCTFS batch for 1 October 2018. Paragraph 4001.6 separately covers Reserve retraining, subject to available funds for the specified retraining groups, and record updates for Individual Mobilization Augmentees, Individual Ready Reservists and Standby Reservists. Under paragraph 4002.3, formal schools keep awarding current MOSs until a MARADMIN directs implementation. The batch date is not a documented universal individual qualification or retraining date.

Cyber Security Apprentice (NMOS) (0651)

MOS 0688 changed from Cyber Security Apprentice, an NMOS tied to 0651, to Cybersecurity Technician, a primary MOS (PMOS), while retaining code 0688. The authorized grade range changed from Private through Sergeant to Sergeant through Gunnery Sergeant, and the table also identifies revisions to the description and requirements.

Paragraph 4001.1b schedules 1 October 2017 as the active-component Marine Corps Total Force System (MCTFS) batch conversion date. Paragraph 4002.2 instead prints 1 October 2008, a conflicting date; the 2017 date follows the FY18 manual's explicit conversion schedule.

  • Reserve retraining for Prior Service MOS Retraining Program, Active Reserve and Selected Marine Corps Reserve Marines was required as needed and subject to available funds; record entries for Individual Mobilization Augmentees, Individual Ready Reservists and Standby Reservists used the headquarters conversion action on the Diary Feedback Report as authority.
  • Formal schools were to continue awarding current MOSs until a MARADMIN directed implementation.
  • The table identifies a requirement change but does not explain the revised qualification requirements.

Source new title: Cybersecurity Technician (PMOS). Figure 4-1 remarks: 2, 4, 7, 8. Encoded as renamed because the allowed output vocabulary has no status-change value and the source also changes the title/status of the same code. NAVMC 1200.1C (FY18) paragraph 4001.1b schedules the active-duty-component MCTFS batch for 2017-10-01. Paragraph 4001.6 separately addresses Reserve retraining, subject to available funds for the specified groups, and records for Individual Mobilization Augmentees, Individual Ready Reservists and Standby Reservists. Paragraph 4002.3 keeps formal-school MOS awards unchanged until MARADMIN implementation direction. The scheduled batch date is not proof of an individual's qualification, retraining or record-update completion. Paragraph 4002.2 prints 1 October 2008, in conflict with the 1 October 2017 schedule in paragraph 4001.1b. The recorded date follows the edition-specific schedule in paragraph 4001.1b; the conflicting printed instruction is not silently corrected. The conversion table changes the classification's grade range from Pvt-Sgt to Sgt-GySgt. These ranges are not a direction to promote or demote individual Marines.
