Marine Corps · SSN history

545 Chief Telegraph Operator

The earlier SSN 545 classification, Chief Telegraph Operator, was deleted; Marines classified under that meaning were to be considered for SSN 766 or 776 only if individually qualified. By June 1945, SSN 545 meant Barracks NCO, a reuse of the number rather than an automatic successor to Chief Telegraph Operator.

Documented history

Chief Telegraph Operator

The deletion is attributed to War Department Memorandum W615-60-43, dated 17 July 1943, but no separate exact implementation date is given. June 1945 is the manual’s publication date, not an effective conversion date.

  • SSNs 766 and 776 were suggested alternatives tied to the earlier Chief Telegraph Operator title, not an automatic split; selection required review of the Marine’s qualifications against the job specifications.
