1316 Metal Worker
Overview
Metal Workers examine drawings and work orders to determine the sequence of operations and the materials, tools, equipment, time, and personnel required. They select stock, set up welding and automated Water Jet cutting equipment, perform nondestructive inspections, and install, operate, maintain, and repair metalworking and welding equipment.

What the Work Involves
- Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
- Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
- Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
