How to prepare: Compile an official sea-service transcript or assignment history, including vessel tonnage, routes, propulsion power, time underway, and duties, for Coast Guard evaluation against the intended endorsement. Most water transportation jobs require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential and a Merchant Mariner Credential with appropriate endorsements, and non-entry-level roles typically require several years of sea time plus applicable training, screening, and examinations.
