Civilian Career Paths

Career associations are editorial assessments of the cited evidence, not an official crosswalk unless the evidence explicitly says so. O*NET supplies civilian occupation information, not proof of a military match. Related experience does not confer civilian qualifications. Tasks and tools below describe civilian work, not military training.

Flute/Piccolo Musician

Playing assigned instruments in Navy bands transfers directly to civilian flute and piccolo ensemble performance.

How to prepare: Prepare a flute and piccolo audition recording tailored to a civilian ensemble's requested repertoire.

What the civilian work involves
  • Perform before live audiences in concerts, recitals, educational presentations, and other social gatherings.
  • Specialize in playing a specific family of instruments or a particular type of music.

Musical Instrument Repairer

Maintaining and making minor repairs to assigned Navy instruments provides a foundation for civilian instrument repair work.

How to prepare: Seek supervised woodwind repair training focused on disassembly and component replacement, since the verified military duties cover only maintenance and minor repairs.

What the civilian work involves
  • Play instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects.
  • Disassemble instruments and parts for repair and adjustment.
  • Repair or replace musical instrument parts and components, such as strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools.
