A multimedia cameraman performs video documentation and production work at the journeyman level. The cameraman applies motion media, dynamic camera movement, nonlinear editing, lighting, and audio techniques to narrative and nonnarrative productions.

Camera Operators, Television, Video, and Film

What the civilian work involves

  • Confer with directors, sound and lighting technicians, electricians, and other crew members to discuss assignments and determine filming sequences, desired effects, camera movements, and lighting requirements.

Intermediate non-linear editing and narrative and non-narrative production experience transfer directly to assembling footage and sound into finished videos.

How to prepare: Build an editing portfolio with a narrative sequence and a non-narrative piece that demonstrate shot selection, continuity, and audio editing.

  • Organize and string together raw footage into a continuous whole according to scripts or the instructions of directors and producers.
  • Edit films and videotapes to insert music, dialogue, and sound effects, to arrange films into sequences, and to correct errors, using editing equipment.
