Civilian Career Paths

Career associations are editorial assessments of the cited evidence, not an official crosswalk unless the evidence explicitly says so. O*NET supplies civilian occupation information, not proof of a military match. Related experience does not confer civilian qualifications. Tasks and tools below describe civilian work, not military training.

Saxophonist

Performing as an instrumentalist in authorized Navy bands directly transfers to civilian ensemble performance.

How to prepare: Prepare a recorded audition sample tailored to the repertoire of a civilian ensemble you want to join.

What the civilian work involves
  • Perform before live audiences in concerts, recitals, educational presentations, and other social gatherings.
  • Specialize in playing a specific family of instruments or a particular type of music.

Musical Instrument Repairer

Maintaining and making minor repairs to assigned Navy instruments provides a foundation for civilian instrument repair work.

How to prepare: Seek supervised woodwind repair training covering disassembly, adjustment, and component replacement, since the verified military duties cover only maintenance and minor repairs.

What the civilian work involves
  • Play instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects.
  • Disassemble instruments and parts for repair and adjustment.
  • Repair or replace musical instrument parts and components, such as strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools.
Civilian tools and software (examples)
