Operating radiology equipment to produce diagnostic mammographic images while providing patient care directly overlaps with radiologic technologist work.
How to prepare: Ask your state health board which radiography licensing route applies to your training; most states require licensure or certification, usually through an accredited program and an exam. ARRT's primary radiography pathway requires an associate degree or higher, completion of an ARRT-approved radiography program, satisfaction of ethics requirements, and passing its exam.
What the civilian work involves
- Position imaging equipment and adjust controls to set exposure time and distance, according to specification of examination.
- Explain procedures and observe patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
- Review and evaluate developed x-rays, video tape, or computer-generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
