Overview

Deep Sea Diving Independent Duty Corpsmen provide health care independently of a medical officer at isolated duty stations and diagnose, treat, and oversee care for diving and hyperbaric illnesses and injuries. They perform diagnostic, laboratory, nursing, minor surgical, routine, and emergency procedures while managing readiness, medical planning, logistics, case management, and industrial hygiene surveillance programs.

Notes & Sources

  • For work covered by OSHA's commercial diving standard, assignments must match task-specific experience or training; CPR and first-aid training are required, as is diving physics and physiology training for personnel exposed to or controlling hyperbaric exposure.
  • OSHA prohibits diving or other hyperbaric exposure during a known temporary impairment or condition likely to adversely affect a dive team member's safety or health.
  • If an employer uses ADCI classifications, seek assessment of documented military training for recognized equivalence: Entry Level requires 625 documented formal-instruction hours or a recognized equivalent; Air Diver requires at least 100 field days and 30 working dives, with only surface-supplied dives counting. ADCI classifications are not a universal government license.
