Electricians
Military installation and maintenance of interior electrical systems and equipment directly overlap with civilian electrical installation and maintenance work.
How to prepare: Submit documented military electrical experience to an apprenticeship sponsor for assessment of credit and remaining training gaps: most electricians complete a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship, but military experience and testing may qualify you for a shortened program. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and most states require licensing and an examination covering the National Electrical Code and state and local codes.
What the civilian work involves
- Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
- Place conduit, pipes, or tubing, inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
- Assemble, install, test, or maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools.
