Working Dog Handler

31K Working Dog Handlers employ trained dogs to detect explosives, narcotics, mines, and IEDs, support route clearance and ECP operations, conduct tracking and perimeter security, and provide non-lethal force protection and psychological deterrence.

Description

Military Working Dog handlers support the installation and maneuver commanders by providing the following capabilities: target odor detection (explosives/narcotics), force protection, controlled aggression and tracking. The PEDD-T and SSD will support combat and route clearance operations by providing the maneuver commander the ability to detect and locate weapons, ammunition, explosives, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). Further, the PEDD-T and SSD will be used to screen equipment, baggage, and vehicles entering a controlled area. As part of an Entry Control Point (ECP), the PEDD-T or SSD will search vehicles for explosive hazards. The PEDD-T and PNDD-T protect Mission Essential Vulnerable Areas (MEVA) and High Value Targets (HVT) by providing perimeter security in an effort to restrict unauthorized entry. The PEDD-T and PNDD-T provide installation and maneuver commanders a less than lethal course of action that serves as a psychological deterrent. The PEDD-T and PNDD-T assets provide the maneuver commander the ability to track target individuals for the purpose of reestablishing contact with enemy or friendly missing or captured personnel. PEDD-T and PNDD-T assets provide a psychological deterrent for interned personnel and provide perimeter security for Internment/Resettlement (I/R) operations. The PNDD-T provides commanders and installation Provost Marshals with an effective means of detecting illicit narcotics. The Mine Detection Dog (MDD) will support combat operations by detecting and giving warning of landmines, UXOs, and other casualty-producing devices (surface or buried).
