Getting Started

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

    Establish the civilian driving authorization needed for commercial trucks covered by CDL rules.

    Eligibility and preparation: The CLP minimum age is 18; non-excepted interstate driving generally requires age 21 and sufficient English proficiency. Applicants must meet domicile, citizenship or lawful permanent residency, and driver qualification requirements. Knowledge and skills tests apply unless separately waived. First-time Class A or B applicants generally need Training Provider Registry training. A state may waive the skills test with two years of safe, equivalent military vehicle experience and application within one year of leaving the qualifying military driving position, subject to license and driving-record conditions. A separate knowledge-test waiver has qualifying military-code, one-year recency, representative-vehicle, license, and record conditions. The military training exemption requires meeting all applicable conditions of 49 CFR 383.77.
