A Motor Vehicle Operator inspects, operates, and manages medium and heavy wheeled vehicles to transport troops, supplies, and equipment across varied terrain and weather conditions. Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers

Operating and inspecting medium and heavy vehicles, transporting supplies and equipment, and maintaining vehicle records transfer directly to commercial truck driving.

How to prepare: Take your military vehicle and driving records to your state licensing agency to identify the CDL class appropriate to the trucks you intend to drive. Commercial vehicles covered by CDL rules require a state-issued CDL.

Getting Started

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

    Obtain the vehicle-class license needed for the selected commercial driving work.

    Eligibility and preparation: The CLP minimum age is 18; non-excepted interstate driving generally requires age 21 and sufficient English proficiency. Applicants must meet state eligibility rules, document citizenship or lawful permanent residency and state domicile, and pass applicable knowledge and skills tests unless waived. First-time Class A or B applicants must complete registered-provider entry-level driver training unless exempt. States may grant military testing waivers under 49 CFR 383.77: the skills waiver requires two years of safe experience in equivalent vehicles and application within one year of leaving the qualifying military driving position. A separate knowledge-test waiver includes MOS 3531, subject to recent qualifying duties, representative vehicle experience, licensing and driving-record conditions. The military training exemption requires meeting all applicable 383.77 conditions.
