Ship Engineers
Maintaining and troubleshooting LCAC gas turbines, propulsion and lift systems, and mechanical auxiliaries transfers directly to shipboard machinery fault diagnosis and maintenance.
How to prepare: Before enrolling in training, have USCG assess your existing qualifications and documented military sea service for the MMC engineering endorsement appropriate to the intended vessel, route and role, using an official sea-service transcript or assignment history with vessel particulars and duties, not a DD-214 alone. Plan for the endorsement's required sea time, approved training, medical clearance, professional examinations and drug testing, plus a TWIC where required; open-ocean service also requires USCG-verified STCW training and the applicable endorsement.
What the civilian work involves
- Monitor engine, machinery, or equipment indicators when vessels are underway, and report abnormalities to appropriate shipboard staff.
- Monitor and test operations of engines or other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified.
