Commercial Divers
Underwater searches, ship-bottom inspections, and SCUBA equipment maintenance transfer directly to commercial diving work.
How to prepare: Have a prospective employer assess your existing qualifications and documented military training against the intended assignments: OSHA-covered work requires task-relevant equipment, diving-mode and emergency training or experience, CPR and first aid training, and diving physics and physiology training for personnel exposed to or controlling hyperbaric exposure. If pursuing ADCI cards, request an equivalency assessment before enrolling in additional schooling: its Entry Level classification requires 625 documented hours of formal instruction under ANSI/ACDE-01-2015 or a recognized equivalent, while its Air Diver classification requires at least 100 field days and 30 working dives as an Air Diver, with only surface-supplied dives counting toward that classification.
What the civilian work involves
- Take appropriate safety precautions, such as monitoring dive lengths and depths and registering with authorities before diving expeditions begin.
- Check and maintain diving equipment, such as helmets, masks, air tanks, harnesses, or gauges.
- Descend into water with the aid of diver helpers, using scuba gear or diving suits.
