Civilian Career Paths

Career associations are editorial assessments of the cited evidence, not an official crosswalk unless the evidence explicitly says so. O*NET supplies civilian occupation information, not proof of a military match. Related experience does not confer civilian qualifications. Tasks and tools below describe civilian work, not military training.

Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Commercial and Industrial Equipment

Maintaining AN/SLQ-32(V)7 power supplies, cooling systems, and electronic interfaces provides directly relevant subsystem maintenance experience for commercial and industrial electronics repair.

How to prepare: Complete a hands-on industrial electronics troubleshooting course focused on power supplies, component inspection, and post-repair testing.

What the civilian work involves
  • Test faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment or software, and applying knowledge of the functional operation of electronic units and systems.
  • Inspect components of industrial equipment for accurate assembly and installation or for defects, such as loose connections or frayed wires.
  • Set up and test industrial equipment to ensure that it functions properly.
Civilian tools and software (examples)
  • Circuit evaluation software
  • Computerized maintenance management system CMMS

Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technologists and Technicians

Maintenance of electronic warfare power supplies, interfaces, and antenna assemblies transfers to the equipment maintenance and component-testing portions of electronics engineering technician work.

How to prepare: Take a laboratory course that combines schematic reading with electronic assembly testing and written test results.

What the civilian work involves
  • Modify, maintain, or repair electronics equipment or systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Set up and operate specialized or standard test equipment to diagnose, test, or analyze the performance of electronic components, assemblies, or systems.
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
