Overview

Medical Deep Sea Diving Technicians help prevent, recognize, and treat illnesses associated with diving and provide prolonged casualty care, basic life support, advanced life support, and tactical combat casualty care. They serve as inside tenders for recompression chambers, dive using Navy air and mixed-gas apparatuses, and operate, test, repair, and adjust diving equipment, support systems, and recompression chambers.

Commercial Divers

How to prepare: Ask the destination State EMS Office and a paramedic program to assess your current credentials and completed education before choosing any additional coursework. The National Registry full-education pathway requires current EMT-level or higher National Registry certification or state licensure, completion within two years of a CAAHEP-accredited or CoAEMSP Letter of Review paramedic program with verified student minimum competencies, and the certification examination; National Registry certification alone does not authorize practice.

  • Administer drugs, orally or by injection, or perform intravenous procedures.
  • Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings.
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.

  • For OSHA-covered commercial diving, assignments must match documented experience or training in the relevant equipment, diving mode, and emergency procedures; CPR, first aid, and applicable diving physics and physiology training are required. A known temporary impairment affecting safety can preclude diving or hyperbaric exposure.
