Overview

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal apprentice diver trains in student status and performs basic diving procedures, including daytime and nighttime bottom and hull searches using SCUBA and surface supplied equipment. The apprentice tests, repairs, and adjusts underwater equipment and recognizes and assists in treating diving injuries such as decompression sickness and other forms of barotrauma.

Commercial Divers

How to prepare: Ask a commercial-diving employer to assess your existing qualifications, military training records and dive logs against the intended assignments and any ADCI classification it requires. For OSHA-covered work, dive-team members need task-appropriate experience or training, CPR and first aid training, and diving physics and physiology training when exposed to or controlling hyperbaric exposure.

Notes & Sources

  • M01A is a student-status NEC describing basic procedures, not evidence of completed EOD training or advanced commercial-diving experience.
  • If pursuing ADCI classification, Entry Level requires at least 625 documented hours of qualifying formal instruction or a recognized equivalent; have existing training assessed for equivalency. Air Diver requires at least 100 field days and 30 working dives as an Air Diver, with only surface-supplied dives counting. These are ADCI program standards, not a universal government license.
  • For OSHA-covered work, limited additional tasks during training require direct supervision by an experienced dive-team member. Employers must also withhold diving or other hyperbaric exposure during known temporary impairments likely to affect safety or health.
