Nuclear Power Reactor Operators
Qualified supervision of submarine nuclear propulsion plant operation and maintenance provides directly relevant experience for civilian reactor operations.
How to prepare: Ask a commercial nuclear facility's operator-training program to assess your documented watchstation qualifications and experience against its entry criteria. NRC operator licensing requires meeting the facility's education and experience criteria and facility certification of required training and experience; the license is valid only for that facility.
What the civilian work involves
- Operate nuclear power reactors in accordance with policies and procedures to protect workers from radiation and to ensure environmental safety.
- Develop or implement actions such as lockouts, tagouts, or clearances to allow equipment to be safely repaired.
- Monitor all systems for normal running conditions, performing activities such as checking gauges to assess output or the effects of generator loading on other equipment.
