Ship Engineers
When designated by the commanding officer in the specified officers' absence, this specialist supervises engineering watch personnel during departures, anchoring, and underway replenishment, directly overlapping shipboard plant operations.
How to prepare: Assemble an official sea-service transcript or assignment history with vessel tonnage, routes, propulsion power, underway time, and assigned duties for an NMC engine-endorsement evaluation; a DD-214 is not acceptable sea-service evidence. Use the applicable NMC checklist to plan for the MMC and engine endorsement, TWIC requirements, and Coast Guard review of experience, citizenship, medical fitness, approved training, professional competence, and drug testing.
What the civilian work involves
- Monitor engine, machinery, or equipment indicators when vessels are underway, and report abnormalities to appropriate shipboard staff.
- Monitor and test operations of engines or other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified.
- Start engines to propel ships, and regulate engines and power transmissions to control speeds of ships, according to directions from captains or bridge computers.
