Ship Engineers

Evaluating shipboard operating conditions and recommending action to the engineering officer transfers to monitoring vessel machinery and reporting abnormalities.

How to prepare: Gather an official sea-service transcript, vessel specifications, underway time, and assigned duties for Coast Guard evaluation against the NMC engine-officer endorsement checklist. Entry generally requires a TWIC and Merchant Mariner Credential with the appropriate engine endorsement, qualifying sea time, and applicable training, examinations, medical and drug screening; open-ocean service also requires USCG-verified STCW training.

What the civilian work involves
  • Monitor engine, machinery, or equipment indicators when vessels are underway, and report abnormalities to appropriate shipboard staff.
  • Monitor and test operations of engines or other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified.
