Stationary Engineers and Boiler Operators
SPO qualification and a completed assignment aboard a qualifying LCC/LHD provide a direct steam-plant operations connection to civilian stationary-engine and boiler work.
How to prepare: Ask the licensing authority where you intend to work which license class covers the target equipment and how your documented Navy experience counts toward it. Some state and local governments require licenses with experience requirements and a written exam, with each class limiting the type and size of equipment permitted for unsupervised operation.
What the civilian work involves
- Operate or tend stationary engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, compressors, or air-conditioning equipment, to supply and maintain steam or heat for buildings, marine vessels, or pneumatic tools.
- Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler operation to ensure that boilers are operating properly.
