Overview

Utilitiesmen install, maintain, and repair plumbing, heating, steam, compressed air, fuel, water, refrigeration, air conditioning, and wastewater systems according to plans and specifications. They supervise and evaluate installation and operational work, prepare records and reports, and support combat and disaster preparedness or recovery operations.

How to prepare: Submit your documented military trade experience, completed training, and existing qualifications to the destination licensing board for assessment against its requirements. Most states and some localities license plumbers, often requiring experience and an exam for independent work; pipefitter, steamfitter, and gas-line licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction.

What the civilian work involves
  • Install underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing.
  • Assemble pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment.
  • Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, or fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers or levels.

Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant and System Operators

UT work on water treatment, distribution, and wastewater systems, together with operational evaluation and recordkeeping, overlaps treatment-plant operations.

How to prepare: Ask the destination state's operator licensing authority to assess your documented UT experience, completed education, and any existing operator license against its license levels. A state license is usually required, entry-level workers often qualify during supervised training, and interstate recognition is not automatic.

  • Operate and adjust controls on equipment to purify and clarify water, process or dispose of sewage, and generate power.
  • Record operational data, personnel attendance, or meter and gauge readings on specified forms.
  • Inspect equipment or monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges to determine load requirements and detect malfunctions.
