Overview

An Aviation Maintenance Technician services and maintains rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft, propellers, drive systems, and power plants. The technician inspects aircraft and engines, repairs fuel and hydraulic systems, performs nondestructive testing and welding, controls corrosion, maintains records, and may fill aircrew positions.

Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians

Getting Started

  • Mechanic (Airframe & Powerplant)

    Earn FAA Airframe and Powerplant ratings to support entry into civilian aircraft maintenance jobs.

    Eligibility and preparation: Applicants must be at least 18 and able to read, write, speak, and understand English. The experience route requires 30 months concurrently performing duties appropriate to both ratings, or at least 18 months for one rating. Alternative routes include graduation from an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School or completion of the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council training course. Knowledge, oral, and practical tests are required.

  • ASTM NCATT Foreign Object Elimination (FOE)

    Demonstrate foreign object prevention knowledge in housekeeping, tool accountability, and material handling for aircraft maintenance environments.

    Eligibility and preparation: The exam is open regardless of age, career field, training, education, or experience; AET certification is not required.
