Overview

A Transmissions Chief oversees the planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and supervision of radio, terrestrial wideband transmission, and wideband satellite communications systems. The chief develops site plans, integrates transmission data into communications electronic operating instructions, and manages training, security measures, equipment deployment, maintenance procedures, budgets, and administrative processes.

How to prepare: Complete a practical workshop in commercial antenna installation and transmission-line sweep testing. For work maintaining, adjusting, or internally repairing FCC-licensed radiotelephone transmitters in aviation, maritime, or international fixed public radio services, plan for the General Radiotelephone Operator License.

What the civilian work involves
  • Read work orders, blueprints, plans, datasheets or site drawings to determine work to be done.
  • Install all necessary transmission equipment components, including antennas or antenna mounts, surge arrestors, transmission lines, connectors, or tower-mounted amplifiers (TMAs).
  • Test operation of tower transmission components, using sweep testing tools or software.

Telecommunications Equipment Installers and Repairers, Except Line Installers

Maintaining terrestrial wideband systems and integrating transmission equipment with data communications provide a foundation for installing and testing civilian telecommunications equipment.

How to prepare: Build a supervised lab project that installs a small data communications system, introduces equipment faults, and documents testing against specifications.

What the civilian work involves
  • Test circuits and components of malfunctioning telecommunications equipment to isolate sources of malfunctions, using test meters, circuit diagrams, polarity probes, and other hand tools.
  • Test repaired, newly installed, or updated equipment to ensure that it functions properly and conforms to specifications, using test equipment and observation.
  • Assemble and install communication equipment such as data and telephone communication lines, wiring, switching equipment, wiring frames, power apparatus, computer systems, and networks.
