How to prepare: Ask a target fire department to assess your military firefighting certificates and identify needed academy and emergency medical services training; entry typically includes a high school diploma, written and physical tests, interviews, and fire academy training. Licensing and certification vary by state or locality, departments may require EMT certification, and operating a firetruck may require a CDL or a driver's license with firefighter endorsement.
What the civilian work involves
- Rescue survivors from burning buildings, accident sites, and water hazards.
- Dress with equipment such as fire-resistant clothing and breathing apparatus.
- Respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance, such as automobile and industrial accidents.
