Overview

An LCAC Radar Operator and Navigator operates radar, navigation, and communications equipment during amphibious assault and training operations. This specialist provides tactical recommendations to the LCAC Craftmaster based on amphibious assault tactics, navigation, rules of the road, and radio and visual communication procedures.

Merchant Mariner Deck Officer (Mate)

LCAC navigation, radar operation, maritime communications and rules-of-the-road recommendations transfer directly to vessel navigation work.

How to prepare: Before choosing further training, submit existing qualifications and an official sea-service transcript or assignment history with vessel, route, underway-time and duty details for USCG evaluation toward an MMC mate endorsement appropriate to the intended vessel and route; a DD-214 is not acceptable sea-service evidence. Address assessed gaps in sea time, typically several years, approved training and examinations, and meet applicable TWIC, age, citizenship, medical and drug-testing requirements.

  • Consult maps, charts, weather reports, or navigation equipment to determine and direct ship movements.
  • Prevent ships under navigational control from engaging in unsafe operations.
