Overview

An LCAC Craft Pilot in the second position operates LCAC 100 Class vehicles during amphibious assault and training operations to and from LHAs, LHDs, LPDs, and LSDs and across surf and beach interfaces. This pilot applies amphibious assault tactics, navigation, rules of the road, and radio and visual communication procedures while supervising the crew through all phases of craft operation.

LCAC operation combines vessel navigation, Rules of the Road, maritime communications, and crew supervision that transfer to civilian vessel operations.

How to prepare: Before enrolling in training, assess existing credentials and request USCG evaluation of an official military sea-service transcript or assignment history, with vessel characteristics, routes, underway time, and duties, for the MMC and endorsement appropriate to your intended vessel, route, and role; a DD-214 is not acceptable sea-service evidence. Address remaining endorsement requirements for sea time, approved training, medical fitness, drug testing, and professional examinations, and obtain a TWIC where required; these roles typically require several years of sea time.

What the civilian work involves
  • Prevent ships under navigational control from engaging in unsafe operations.
  • Consult maps, charts, weather reports, or navigation equipment to determine and direct ship movements.
  • Steer and operate vessels, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses.
