How to prepare: Ask the FAA to evaluate your documented military maintenance experience for Airframe and Powerplant certification eligibility. Certification requires age 18 or older, English proficiency, knowledge, oral, and practical tests, and either qualifying experience of 18 months for one rating or 30 months concurrently for both, graduation from an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School, or completion of the military JSAMTCC training course; airlines often require certification for hiring even though it is not an FAA requirement for every airline mechanic job.
What the civilian work involves
- Inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.
- Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations.
