C-40A in-flight duties and knowledge of emergency procedures and flight equipment provide a foundation for civilian cabin safety work.
How to prepare: Apply to airline flight-attendant openings that provide initial training after hire, followed by aircraft-specific and annual recurrent training. Under 49 USC 44728, serving as a cabin flight attendant on an air-carrier aircraft with 20 or more seats requires an FAA Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency, issued after the carrier confirms completion of all FAA-approved flight-attendant training requirements.
What the civilian work involves
- Verify that first aid kits and other emergency equipment, including fire extinguishers and oxygen bottles, are in working order.
- Announce and demonstrate safety and emergency procedures, such as the use of oxygen masks, seat belts, and life jackets.
- Direct and assist passengers in emergency procedures, such as evacuating a plane following an emergency landing.
